As London readies for Prince William to marry Kate Middleton, bridal shop owners prep for the rush of brides wanting to copy the soon-to-be princess' style.

You get the impression she has said this a thousand times before. "We're not just designers and seamstresses," says DiBella.

"We also have to have a skill set similar to that of a psychologist because choosing a wedding gown can be a stressful time for a lot of women and there will be ups and downs. When I'm working with brides, not once do I forget that this is a huge decision for her because she knows she is going to be on show and she is going to want to look the best she has ever looked. Never again in her life will she be photographed a hundred times. Never again will she have a hundred sets of eyes looking at her. When Hildebrand walks down the aisle at Toorak Uniting Church on January 7 next year, there will be 140pairs of eyes on her. "I have been a little bit anxious about the dress because it is a big decision and I do want to look great and feel comfortable and confident about the way I look on the day," she says.

"At the same time I don't want to get too stressed about it all because the last thing I want to do is look back and think, ‘You know what, I stressed myself out to the point that I ruined the whole experience."'

If Hildebrand is worried about being the focus of 140 pairs of eyes when she gets married, she should spare a thought for Kate Middleton. An estimated 2billion viewers are expected to be watching when she marries Prince William at Westminster Abbey next Friday. . DiBella and Hardwick agree that because women tend to marry later than they did a decade or two ago, and often pay for their own weddings, mothers are having less influence over the choice of wedding gown. Hardwick says these days a lot of women tend to go 1 shopping with their 3, though many will bring their mothers along to be part of the experience.

"We do still get plenty of mothers coming along to our consultations and fittings, but I don't think they play such a huge role in determining what the dress will look like any more," she says. "In saying that, you still do sometimes overhear mothers giving their daughters pretty serious directions as to what they think they should or shouldn't wear or what they think constitutes a 2. For Hildebrand, having her mother and sister by her side while choosing her wedding gown offers her a second and third opinion, but also includes them in her wedding plans. DiBella's high-end boutique is the fourth bridal store the three women have visited today. They will visit two more stores this afternoon and in a few days Carly will return to try on more dresses in three more stores. By the end of the week she will have tried on close to 40 dresses. Within a week or so she hopes to be able to narrow that down to three before settling on "the one".

"It's pretty special for us," says Carly's sister, Bianca Bartlett. "When I got married Carly was living in the UK, so we didn't get to do all this together, so it's very special.

"I think the choosing of the 6 is a really 4," interrupts Carly's mother, Maureen Hildebrand. "Because I believe the wedding is all about the bride, and the bride is the dress, and when you get that right and you see your daughter or your sister standing there looking like a beautiful bride, it's really special."

DiBella says there are three key criteria you have to tick when choosing a wedding gown: whether it suits your shape, personality and venue. Others believe there is an even more telling sign that you have found 7.

"I knew I'd found the right one because when I put it on, mum just burst into tears," laughs Bianca.

Hardwick agrees the so-called "cry test" is a pretty good sign you've found the right one. "It's not uncommon for mums to burst into tears when they see their daughter in their wedding dress. And then the next thing the bride is in tears and the fitter is in tears and everyone is in tears. It still is a really emotional time for everybody. We have probably gone a bit modern now and a lot of the tradition has gone, but getting married is still a really special time in somebody's life. And there's still something really beautiful and emotional about seeing a beautiful bride in her wedding dress."
